We picked up a hire car and stocked up on wine and beer and bought a cool box as we were going to be spending about 3 nights in remote bush camps that had no electricity or fridge facilities. Our first stop was a Sanctuary retreat just off Mission beach. It was set high in a dense rain forest in an open sided hut and outdoor loo and shower. There was a great deserted beach where we were able to get the drone up and get some arial shots.

Next stop was Townsville for 1 night ready to catch a ferry early next morning to Magnetic island where they have wild koala’s and a few great walks which we did first thing in the morning as it would have been way too hot during the rest of the day. You can also see rock wallabies at dusk. Then onto Airlie beach ready for a pre-booked sea plane flight over the Whitsunday’s and another chance to snorkel on the great barrier reef. All great fun and its easy to see why Whitehaven beach is in the top 10 beaches in the world. The sand was so white and soft, it resembled flour to touch. The water was crystal clear and the loveliest blue shade.

Making our way further down towards Mackay, we stayed our final 2  nights in Platypus bush camp in Finch Hatton gorge. What a beautiful spot with the elusive duckbill platypus right outside our hut in the fresh water creek.  Our hut (the honeymoon suite) was very basic with open sides, a bed and mosquito net and no electricity, but it was a magical spot if you wanted to experience a real out in the bush experience. The owner was a great character and it was interesting to hear his stories of his hard life !

We dropped off our hire car in Mackay airport and flew back to the boat to spend our final week preparing the leave the boat in Brisbane while we returned to the UK. PANTHERA is still for sale and we had a few further offers but they were too low. If she is still not sold by next April / May, we will return and probably sail her to Sydney to explore NSW.

We are now working a video to showcase the 3 months spent exploring Queensland and the red centre. Hope to post it in the next month.
