We flew to Cairns where we booked a great apartment for 1 week that right in town and walking distance to all the bars, restaurants, supermarkets and the esplanade. We used this as our base to do the many sights in the Cairns region. First tour was up to the Daintree river and forest. A day of walks and sight seeing. Next tour was a trip on the Kuranda scenic rail up to the top of the mountains and the small town of Kuranda. We took the cable car down with great views over the tree tops. Another day, we took a fast boat tour out to the outer reefs of the Great Barrier reef ! The snorkelling was good, but i couldn’t help thinking that we had seen better while snorkelling across the South Pacific. Richard dived and he too thought it a little disappointing. He dived on the Great Barrier reef 15 years ago and thought that it wasn’t as good this time. Perhaps its true that the reef  is being affected by climate change and pollution.

We hired a car for 2 days and went inland to the see the Atherton table lands and saw some great waterfalls and visited a Bat hospital which was very informative.

The main thing we will remember about Cairns is the thousands upon thousands of fruit bats and fly out of the trees at dusk to go and feed in the rain forest. It was quite a sight !

After 1 week we departed Cairns in a hire car and started heading down the coast.

A couple of short videos below of the Bats and Richard with a not so friendly Cockatoo !
